Briefly explained

What is the CREG rate?

You do not automatically receive one fixed CREG rate. Your employer determines in the car policy how home charging is reimbursed: based on your proven actual electricity costs or via a fixed amount per kWh. Under this flat-rate method, the compensation may not exceed the official maximum for the quarter in question; your employer may also apply a lower amount.

The CREG reference tariff is an average commercial all-in price for household electricity. Energy, grid costs, levies, surcharges and VAT are included. It is therefore not necessarily equal to your personal energy bill.

Calculation per quarter

How is the maximum amount calculated?

The Federal Public Service Finance uses three monthly averages each time, with a two-month lag. Q4 is therefore based on May, June and July. CREG may display a calculation for the following quarter earlier, but our knowledge base only adopts a new quarterly amount once the corresponding FPS addendum has been published and that quarter has begun.

Employer and employee

When can the lump sum be used?

The amount is a maximum, not an automatic right. Your employer may only use the flat rate if the chosen method is stated in the car policy and the conditions below are met.

  • If your employer uses the regional rates, the rate of your place of residence applies. An employer can also use one rate for everyone, but at most the lowest regional rate of that quarter and according to a choice that is maintained for the entire calendar year.
  • The car policy must provide for reimbursement and the number of kWh charged at home for the electric or plug-in hybrid company car must be measured accurately and verifiably. If there are multiple company cars, the consumption per car must be demonstrable separately.
  • Accuracy class B or an equivalent standard applies to measuring systems that were purchased, rented or leased new from January 1 January 2025. A Class B MID meter is a common way to comply.
  • From a fiscal perspective, the flat-rate arrangement has been made permanent via circular 2025/C/38. The RSZ will follow the same amounts for social contributions for the time being until the end of 2026 and will re-evaluate its position. Tax and social security rules therefore do not automatically have the same term.

We install the connected charging solution, and the reimbursement platform records the kWh charged per session. These data are used for reimbursement and reporting to your employer or leasing company. If the tax conditions are met, the reimbursement does not create an additional benefit in kind on top of the company car’s normal benefit-in-kind assessment.

For regional rates, the region of your place of residence applies.

When calculating mileage, we assume that you top up all specified kilometers at home. We expect that 90% of the charging current ends up in your battery. If you leave the consumption blank, we use 18 kWh/100 km. Do you also charge elsewhere or do you want to calculate more precisely? Choose “Via kWh” and enter the measured electricity that you charge at home. The CREG maximum may change quarterly. Your employer may reimburse a lower amount or the proven actual cost.
